A cooler growing season yielded small parcels of intensely aromatic and succulent Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the benchmark varieties of the Southern Rhone Valley. Willoughby Bridge Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre is a vibrant red with purple tinges, an indication of the impressive concentration of aromas and flavours to come. The palate is a perfect balance of fruit, savoury notes, fine long tannins and acid. It does not have excessive ripeness, extraction or oak.
Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are grown at our Willoughby Bridge Vineyard at Colbinabbin in Northern Heathcote. With a North to South row orientation, this vineyard is spur pruned to encourage a dense canopy to protect the fruit from the harsh afternoon summer sun. All rows are mulched naturally, this protection at the base of the vines minimises sun reflection and alters the micro climate to make it milder within the vine canopy.
After handpicking, the separate fruit parcels were given a short pre-fermentation cold soak before being crushed and open fermented at warm temperatures. The wine was hand-plunged twice daily during its six-day ferment to extract the desired levels of colour and flavour. After ferment the individual wines were pressed of into new and secondary oak casks. Blended and bottled in October 2015.
